VW wants to soon be able to produce 1 million batteries a year worldwide
The Volkswagen Group is starting the construction of a new battery plant in Hefei, which will initially produce 150,000 to 180,000 batteries for Chinese MEB vehicles from the second half of 2023. VW will invest around 140 million euros in the new plant by 2025.
The 45,000 square meter battery plant will be built right next to the car plant and will then only have to deliver the batteries in the neighborhood. With battery production, VW’s share of added value in the future electric vehicles produced by Volkswagen Anhui will rise to around 40 percent, according to VW.
Until the end of 2020, Volkswagen Anhui was still called JAC Volkswagen – because it is a joint venture with JAC. However, at the end of 2020, VW took over the majority and renamed the company.

VW wants to increase the share of e-vehicles in sales in China to 40 percent by 2030. To this end, the group is expanding its manufacturing centers in Anting (joint venture with SAIC) and in Foshan (joint venture with FAW) to include a third center in Anhui by 2023.
VW Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall said Anhui was "an important pillar" of VW’s global battery strategy. This includes vertical integration – from the raw material market to cell and battery factories together with partners (such as Northvolt or Gotion) to second-life solutions and recycling.
In addition to Anhui, we are currently building capacities for the production of batteries in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic in Chattanooga (USA). The aim is to be able to manufacture over a million battery systems annually within a few years, according to the group.
No cells are manufactured in the battery plant, only the aluminum frame for the battery is built and the various components are installed: the cell modules, the cell management controller, the battery management system and a connector strip.
