VW wants to build the new Trinity model in a completely new plant on the green field. It is apparently to be built in the vicinity of the traditional main factory in Wolfsburg. A formal decision has not yet been made, according to the head of the VW brand, Ralf Brandstatter. The plan could be approved in early December when the board of directors decides on strategic investments.

The electric car with the project name Trinity is to be installed in the new plant from 2026 be built. This model is to be based on the Scalable Systems Platform SSP, which will replace the MEB and PPE platforms from 2026. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports that 250,000 Trinity will be built annually. According to the article, it is not possible to convert the existing plant to an efficient Trinity production while production is running.

The main plant, where the Golf and Tiguan are currently manufactured, could later be converted to electric cars if demand for combustion models declines. VW expects this from 2030. Initially, the successor generations of the Golf and Tiguan are to be built in Wolfsburg, which will start in 2023.

At the main plant in Wolfsburg, capacity utilization is currently extremely low, and short-time work is at an all-time high. Group boss Diess then spoke of a possible reduction of 30,000 jobs in order to make the plant competitive. The new works council boss Daniela Cavallo had opposed and called for the production of a new electric car from 2024. The conflict had escalated to the point that at times a replacement from Diess was even under discussion.

The workload worries should be alleviated by the new plant, but not eliminated. The works council had said that the Trinity model would not be sufficient to utilize the around 14,000 employees. That is why the call for another electric car for the Wolfsburg plant is still under discussion.
