With the "planning round 70", a kind of five-year plan, VW is now laying down the distribution of the new electric cars among the European locations. In addition to Zwickau and Emden (where the electric Passat alias Aero B will be built from 2023) further European locations are now being electrified.

The Group’s supervisory board decided on the allocation of the individual plants on Thursday. The following picture gives a first overview:

Wolfsburg: Trinity and ID.3

From 2024, part of the ID.3 production will be relocated to Wolfsburg. Partial production with delivery from Zwickau is already planned beforehand. In addition, the production of the Trinity has been confirmed. The model planned for 2026 is to be manufactured in a new plant that is being built on the green field as VW brand boss Brandstatter recently revealed. A second modern electric car production facility is to be set up on the current factory premises from 2030. In addition, the Sandkamp campus, a new research center, is being built in Wolfsburg.

Leipzig: Electric Macan and another PPE car

Two Porsche models based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) are manufactured in Leipzig. One of them is probably the electric Macan.

Salzgitter: All battery activities

The Salzgitter site is being expanded to become a European battery hub: the group is investing around 2 billion euros to create the standard cell for electric cars there from 2025 to produce. The development, planning and production control of the battery activities are also to be bundled in Salzgitter – in a separate company under European law. This company also seeks to extend the recently agreed partnerships with Umicore, 24M and Vulcan Responsible for Energy.

Hanover: Artemis and three versions of the ID.Buzz

The commercial vehicle plant in Hanover is to become fully electric in the medium term. The first Artemis vehicle is also to be built there. The body production for a new Bentley model was also confirmed. With the ID.California (the camping version of the ID.Buzz), the autonomously driving ID. Buzz AD and the Moia shuttles will be joined by three variants of the ID.Buzz, which will start in 2022.

Neckarsulm: Probably the A6 e-tron

The A4, A5 convertible, A6, A7 and A8 are currently being built at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. In the future, the "Audi vehicle family E6" will be manufactured there. That should be the planned A6 e-tron which will probably start in 2023.

Osnabruck and Dresden: No decision yet

For the former Karmann plant in Osnabruck, the future production program will not be decided until the next planning round (planning round 71). VW boss Diess recently confirmed his thoughts on a new convertible from VW or Audi, which will then probably be manufactured in Osnabruck. No subsequent use concept has yet been developed for Dresden either. The ID.3 is currently being built there (in smaller numbers than in Zwickau).

Component factories

The Hanover location will also manufacture hardware for the charging infrastructure and axles for MEB models. In Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Kassel, the existing production of MEB parts such as the battery system, rotor / stator and electric motor is to be expanded. In addition, the locations are already preparing for the production of essential components of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which will start in 2026.

Brussels: Q8 e-tron

As already announced in advance, Brussels (where the e-tron has been built so far) will receive the new Audi Q8 e-tron from 2026.

Martorell and Pamplona: Probably ID.1 and ID.2

The Spanish multi-brand factories Martorell (near Barcelona) and Pamplona (near Bilbao) will also soon be building electric cars. From 2025, compact e-cars (presumably the small car ID.1) are to be built in Martorell, and electric SUVs (presumably the ID.2, the production version of the VW ID.Life) in Pamplona).

52 billion euros for e-mobility by 2026

The total investments of the group over the next five years are expected to amount to 159 billion euros. Of this, 89 billion or 56 percent are attributable to the future areas of e-mobility, hybridization and digitization. The additional investment requirement arises mainly from the accelerated ramp-up of e-mobility and the company’s own battery factories.

Around a third of the total investment, namely 52 billion, will flow into electromobility. For the "bridging technology" hybridization (ie probably the development of PHEVs), in return, around 30 percent less are planned, namely only 8 billion. For digitization (especially the new software services with which VW wants to earn money in the future, but also for autonomous driving), 30 billion euros are earmarked for 2026.
