In Europe alone, the VW Group together with partners wants to build six Giga factories with a production capacity of a total of 240 GWh. In Sweden, VW works closely with Northvolt. When selecting further locations, the Group sets itself on Spain. And yet you do not want to put yourself alone on the battery. This gave Thomas Schmall, Chairman of the Executive Board VW Group Components, to understand the Frankfurter General Sunday newspaper.
Schmall derives the plan of Volkswagen to build up to 2030 six large battery cell factories throughout Europe, an important part of the car manufacturer’s efforts to overtake Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles. The company has previously declared that it would realize this with external partners and financial resources would expand its own battery division. In the long term, one could even imagine the market companions with battery cells to supply. One thing is certain, however, “We want to set a standard for our industry,” says Schmall.
The first two factories arise together with Northvolt in Swedish Skellefteå and Salzgitter. Due to the higher demand, Volkswagen decided to re-establish the planned cell production so far. The production of Volkswagen cells is concentrated in collaboration with Northvolt in the Swedish GigaFabrik “Northvolt ETT” in Skellefteå. The production of these cells should start 2023 and gradually expanded to up to 40 GWh annual capacity.
In addition to the planned in-house production, above all, the new unit cell should bring significant cost advantages. It will be introduced from 2023 and in 2030 trademark in up to 80 percent of all electric vehicles of the Group are installed. These could also be the addressed cell with which one wants to put a standard to sell them to the competition.
Lastly, Bosch and VW announced that the cost and technology leadership in the industrialization of battery technology and series production seeking sustainable, state-of-the-art batteries. The planned “local for local” production approach is an important step on the way to CO2-neutral mobility.

About 3 million cars are admitted alone in Germany per year and if that should be the current E cars, then the 240 GWh would range just for Germany. For all of Europe it would be a bit short, especially if E-SUVs with large batteries should continue to be sold.
240 GWh (240.000.000 kWh) divided by 10 million. E-cars would be 24 kWh as a battery pack per e-car.
Myself, I’m rather for small electric cars with smaller batteries – there would be 240 GWh.
