VW is defying the weak sales at Vans by bringing more and more of these large-capacity vehicles onto the market. Among other things, the second generation of the Touran. It’s now even more practical and more expensive.
Ka family van is sold as often in Germany as the Touran. Accordingly, there will be great interest when VW launches the second generation of the bestseller in September. It is true that the car makes a good step forward in terms of space, variability, consumption and equipment. But VW is also paying for this progress and is raising the base price by around 500 to 23,350 euros.
With the new generation, the Touran is also switching to the modular transverse matrix and benefits from this in several ways: The wheelbase increases by eleven and the length by 13 centimeters, so that the now 4.53-meter-long van offers noticeably more space inside.
The new seating system with three or five seats in the rear can not only be varied as usual by sliding and folding, but can now also be laid completely flat without dismantling, thus creating even more space for suitcases and boxes. Even with full seating, the seven-seater still holds 137 liters and the five-seater 743 liters, and with a few simple steps you can expand the storage space to up to 1857 liters.

The list of assistance systems includes innovations such as cruise control with distance control and the emergency brake for city traffic, for convenience there is a heated steering wheel and automatic air conditioning with certified allergy protection, and the Touran also seems to have arrived in the digital world when it comes to connectivity being.
With Mirror Link, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all common smartphones can be integrated. And where other manufacturers rely on a second interior mirror to look at the youngsters, VW can also display the images from a GoPro camera on the large touchscreen if required. Regardless of whether she is now squinting at the child seat, checking that the horse trailer is in order or, for example, making maneuvering a caravan easier.
It is above all little things like these that make the difference for Borghard Schetschorke from the Touran‘s technical project management team. And the engineer can list a number of them. For example the 220-volt socket in the trunk, the cooling compartment under the center armrest or the up to 47 shelves.
For the first time with intercom
And of course, the Lower Saxony have also sharpened the design: Inside, the Touran with its many decorative consoles, the frameless mirror and the sharper displays looks a bit tidier, clearer and, above all, more valuable, and on the outside it looks as if the sheet metal had been freshly ironed on and the edges strengthened. But even with clearer contours, smoother surfaces and sparkling LED lights, the family van does not turn into an exciting car that you turn around curiously.
VW also reports progress with the propulsion: Because the Touran has shed up to 62 kilos despite the growth and only the new EU6 engines are used, consumption should decrease by up to 19 percent. The most economical model is now on the list with 4.1 liters, which is why Heinz-Jakob Neuber, Head of Development, immediately labeled it the “four-liter car among the seven-seater”.
The Touran is great when it comes to saving, but when it comes to having fun, you have to accept a few restrictions. At least until the large diesel with 190 and the gasoline engine with 180 hp are subsequently submitted in January, two engines with 110 and 150 hp are available from each fraction, which are geared more towards common sense than pleasure.

Not only the Passat Variant can pack with its 650 to 1780 liters. But also for the cars in the class above, the air is getting very thin. And the T-model of the E-Class has to fear at least one equal competitor with 695 to 1950 liters and share its sole claim to leadership with the climber from the east.

In any case, the largest diesel makes no secret of the fact that it has to work hard when it has to lift the van to 100 km / h with up to 340 Nm in 9.3 seconds and the airflow with a lot of patience a top speed of 208 km / h wrested. But you can shorten the time with a few gimmicks. The strangest one is this: VW is now offering a kind of electronically amplified intercom system for communicating with the backbenchers for the first time in the Touran.
The rather leisurely pace goes well with the comparatively good-natured chassis. And for customers who need space and still want to speed, there are a few alternatives in the VW portfolio. Maybe even more than you actually need: The Golf Variant for the practical, the Sportsvan for the over 50s and now the new Touran – VW has three vans in the Golf family alone. And that doesn’t include the next Tiguan and its long version with seven seats. Not to mention the Sharan and the trio of Caddy, Caddy Maxi and T6 from the commercial vehicle department.
The trip to test the Touran was supported by VW. You can find our standards of transparency and journalistic independence at www.axelspringer.de/unabhaengigkeit
