There is a big question mark behind Bugatti. The traditional brand never prospered under VW aegis, so far it has only functioned as an expensive prestige object. If Volkswagen does not differ from Bugatti as a brand separates, so the successor to the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is a shaky candidate. Probably among the twelve group brands

VW boss Matthias Muller has announced that everything will now be put to the test. That will bring the end of some models, and the group could also part with entire brands.

NNothing is more certain in the Volkswagen Group these days. Matthias Muller, who, as the new boss, has to work through the "Diesel Gate" disaster together with the lawyer Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt, who has been poached from Daimler, wants to "delete or postpone everything that is not absolutely necessary now".

There could be some shavings, because the group affords some luxury when it comes to model pallets. One or the other brand could also be up for grabs.

There is no alternative to this route, says Stefan Bratzel, head of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach. He estimates that the diesel scandal will cost Volkswagen a total of 30 billion euros.

With regard to the entire group, the economic expert says: “Volkswagen still has a lot of potential for savings. That applies to brands, different models and the enormous variety of variants.

The need for "accelerated efficiency"

In the summer of this year, VW had set the goal of saving at least five billion in the core brand by 2017. "We are becoming more efficient, realigning the product range and core technologies and creating the scope for future-oriented technologies with the accelerated efficiency program," said brand boss Herbert Diess.

But now the efficiency program will inevitably "accelerate" even more.

At Volkswagen, the way is free for a fresh start

In the end he had to take off his hat. Martin Winterkorn has resigned as CEO of VW. The 68-year-old has lost the trust of the supervisory board – he had no knowledge of the manipulations. Source: N24

Matthias Muller, who wants to save a billion in investments every year, will not be able to avoid further streamlining the model program. The range of convertibles was thinned out as early as 2014: after the Eos has been deleted, the Golf convertible and the open Beetle remain.

The large Phaeton limousine is now on the cross-off list – alongside the Bugatti brand and the "one-liter car" XL1, one of the many prestige objects from ex-VW boss Ferdinand Piëch. The upper-class car will now only be available as a purely electric model.

The Phaeton was never really accepted

That should probably continue to be built in Dresden; the future of the Transparent Factory in Dresden, which was built especially for the luxury class sedan, seems to be secured. However, the fact is: The Phaeton is still struggling with acceptance problems today. It never really caught on; the Volkswagen brand name was more of a stumbling block than a seal of quality in this price range.

A VW Polo with a diesel engine should also soon be a thing of the past. In the case of small cars, it is already taking a long time before the higher purchase price compared to a gasoline-powered vehicle is amortized via the cheaper diesel fuel. Due to the even more complex exhaust gas cleaning of diesel engines, sooner or later it will no longer be possible to produce a compact diesel that covers costs.

Experts are already predicting that diesel engines will soon only pay off in large cars and light commercial vehicles. Especially if the tax relief for diesel fuel should one day cease to exist.

A planned mini-SUV based on the Up should also be omitted from the product plan. Volkswagen had already shown such a model as a Taigun study at the end of 2012, as a test balloon for markets such as Brazil and India, where these cars are becoming increasingly popular. However, even before the diesel scandal was uncovered, the decision to develop series production was missing – which is now almost certainly not going to happen.

Is the Sharan superfluous??

Volkswagen also offers options within the model range – such as the all-track models with all-wheel drive or the "Cross" variants for Up and Polo, which are subtly trimmed to give an off-road look. Such derivatives may well cover profitable niches, but a VW Sharan with all-wheel drive, for example, could easily be dispensed with.

The five- to seven-seater van is a family vehicle that parents use to drive their children back and forth between school, gym and music class. Terrain properties are the last thing in demand. It also remains to be seen whether the Sharan model series is generally being scrutinized. Because in the group there is a technically identical, but cheaper sister model with the Seat Alhambra.

The next problem: the Jetta, although the world’s best-selling VW model. The notchback version of the Golf traditionally has its domain in the USA. In Germany, on the other hand, it only ekes out a shadowy existence in the youngest generation. In the first nine months of the current year, only 960 Jettas were newly registered in this country, compared to 205,951 Golf.

The Scirocco is outdated and can be dispensed with

When it comes to streamlining the model range, coupes are also at the forefront of the wobbly candidates. Up to September 2,305 copies of the Scirocco were registered. An almost homeopathic dose in a segment that does not promise any great growth potential.

Since the model presented in 2008 is now an old car in many respects, phasing out would be an obvious option. The coupe derivative of the Passat, known only as the VW CC since the facelift at the beginning of 2012, is also a gem that is not absolutely necessary. Because here, too, the Group is already well positioned with the Audi A5 Sportback.

It will also be exciting to see whether Volkswagen will also part with some of the twelve group brands. Certainly not from Bentley – the brand has just launched its first SUV, the Bentayga. More like from Bugatti. The legendary brand from Molsheim in Alsace, awakened from its slumber by Volkswagen in 1998, has never achieved profitability to this day.

Seat on the up – now the separation?

According to Frank Schwope, an analyst at Nord LB in Hanover, Bugatti is "one of the most superfluous things in the Volkswagen Group". In view of the current situation, it seems questionable whether the Chiron planned as the successor to the Veyron in 2016 will actually go into series production. The super car, which is equipped with a 1500 hp 16-cylinder engine, has already been shown to potential buyers who would also be willing to put 2.2 million euros on the table for it.

While the Czech Volkswagen subsidiary Skoda continues to prosper and even compete directly with the core brand Volkswagen in important segments, Seat has long been considered the big problem child among the group’s volume brands.

The Spaniards have not closed a year with a profit since 2007, but are currently on the up – according to auto expert Stefan Bratzel, this is a reason not to part with her now.

For Bratzel’s colleague Ferdinand Dudenhoffer from the CAR Center Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, “it is not enough to just delete a few badly salable models in order to then finance the high burdens of the crisis”. He assumes damage to the group of up to 60 billion euros.

No longer offer the VW brand in the USA

Therefore, according to Dudenhoffer, the Volkswagen Group should pursue and examine alternatives in addition to the inevitable model cancellations. The expert recommends that VW cars no longer be offered in the USA for an indefinite period of time. In the next ten years there would be no business sense in making a fresh start there.

"You can pay for the recall, but not the damage to your image"

The exhaust scandal at VW is even larger than previously assumed. CEO Martin Winterkorn publicly apologized. Ascan Iredi, Flatex’s chief investment strategist, estimates the consequences. Source: N24

And, unlike Bratzel, Dudenhoffer believes that keeping the Seat brand in the group is dispensable. In return, Skoda could take over almost all Seat customers. As a result, the group saves significantly on distribution costs.

The automobile economist also considers the sale of Ducati and Bugatti to be advisable. Bentley and Lamborghini, on the other hand, would have to stay on board because of the synergy effects resulting from the module strategy with Porsche and Audi.
