It was already on view once at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2021, and it can now be seen at the IAA in Munich next week admire: the futuristic show car from the supplier Webasto.

The vehicle without side doors drives autonomously and electrically and is intended to demonstrate the competencies of Webasto: from the roof with integrated sensors for autonomous driving to an efficient heating system to the traction battery from Webasto and a wallbox.

The company, headquartered in Stockdorf (a district of Gauting near Munich), whose name perpetuates the company's founder (WilhElm BAier STOckdorf), is primarily known for sunroofs, convertible roofs, but also batteries. The company, which was founded in 1901, is one of the 100 largest automotive suppliers in the world.

The so-called Roof Sensor Module contains sensors for autonomous driving integrated in a panoramic roof made of transparent polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is not only lighter and more impact-resistant than glass, it is also easy to shape and particularly permeable to various sensor beams, explains Webasto. The lidar generates a dynamic three-dimensional image of the environment, cameras enable object recognition and show traffic signs or road markings.

Webasto uses thermal management and various cleaning systems so that the sensors work in all weathers and when dirty.

The show car also has the HVH high-voltage heater developed by Webasto, an electric water heating system for vehicles with high-voltage on-board networks. The compact device should heat the vehicle interior quickly, constantly and reliably. With an efficiency of up to 99 percent, it works very efficiently and is the only heater available on the market that can be used flexibly in the voltage range up to 800 V, according to the manufacturer.

Webasto's own car battery, which will be produced in Dangjin (Korea) from 2022 as part of the collaboration with Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation, is used as the energy storage device. The region's first large battery plant is being built there, based on the model of the Webasto plant in Schierling, Bavaria, where batteries for commercial vehicles and buses have been manufactured since 2017. The car battery will be available in a long-range and a basic version.

In addition to the show car, there will also be a prototype of a DC wallbox for bidirectional charging at the trade fair, which enables up to 22 kW charging and discharging power.
