Because there is a great agreement that the emission of greenhouse gases (esp. CO2, methane must be reduced. In that sense, it would have been expected that the Nouvelle excludes the vehicles from the promotion, which eject too much CO2. And that regardless of whether the CO2 comes from the exhaust of the vehicles or from the chimneys of power plants that need to produce the additional electricity in Germany.

Thus, as a basis, one had to expect that a correct Istanalysis is performed, so that appropriate measures can be derived for reduction. This is unfortunately not the case.

Actual CO2 emission

It is first to ask how the electricity for the additional plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles, heat pumps, etc. will be generated. Ecostrom is maximally fed today and in the future, so that additional demand must be provided mainly by fossil energies. This applies to new electric vehicles, for which millions of heat pumps that are to be installed, and also for hydrogen electrolysis.

The revelation of Minister Altmeyer shows this clear, which admits in July 2021 (finally) that the power consumption will be much higher by 2030 in Germany (cf. Handelsblatt from 13.7) When today and that it will not even be possible to completely cover the additional electricity needs from renewable sources. More expensive and CO2 intensive current will also be 2030 indispensable. For hard coal you have to. 800 g CO2 per kWh expect for lignite over 1000. In the gas, there are initially better values, which, however, does not consider that when promoting and transporting is released a lot of methane, which has a multi-higher climate efficiency.

In any case, additional fossil electricity is needed for additional e-vehicles (marginal approach, cf. for this purpose. Rest), so that it is forbidden to calculate with the cutting of all power generation types.

When viewing the plug-in hybrid must now be differentiated whether it is about relatively environmentally friendly vehicles. In extreme cases, these are severe SUVs, which would also have to be undesirable CO2 reasons and should be proven with penalties. Our government is still promoting them …

First, it shows that the new WLTP consumption is still too positive compared to the test results. It should be noted that the limit is 95 g / km, so far exceeded. However, since E vehicles and plug-in hybrids are politically intended, it was determined that the power can be produced without CO2 load. As a result, the Golf Gte is 26 g / km in the CO2 balance of VW. Thus, a thoroughfare with 2 * 95 – 26 = 164 g CO2 / km may be sold. In addition, there are the subsidies and the service driver privilege.

Other hybrids, even if they emit significantly less CO2, will not be promoted. So there are no subsidies for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, which excludes only 88 g of CO2 / km, but no plug-in hybrid is.
The same VW Golf gasoline without hybrid technology is even more environmentally friendly (see last line of ABB. 1), not to mention the much more elaborant technology.

Adjustment reactions

With great delay, politics reacts. From 1.1.In 2022, the plug-in hybrid 60 km must create purely electrically in order to enjoy the promotion. This applies again regardless of electricity and fuel consumption and thus of the actual CO2 emissions. There are no further changes.

The adaptation to the new 60 km rule is running. The existing plug-in hybrids will get a slightly larger battery largely, so you can at least on the paper 60 km. New plug-in hybrids are already brought to the market with an electric range over 60 km.

A check, whether electrically drives electrically, does not take place yet. And in combustion mode, the vehicles consume again due to the heavier battery.

Through this almost arbitrary promotion of some vehicle classes, other non-funded vehicle classes advised to fall behind. The manufacturers provide the following concepts or reduce:

• small car
• natural gas vehicles
• micro
• mild-hybrid

Mild hybrids still have a little chance because they can serve to reduce fleet output to COS. A small consolation is that the SuperCredits are returned. With them electro cars and plug-in hybrids are weighted several times in determining the fleet output to CO2.

Conclusions

Also with the new regulations from 2022 false incentives are set. The no longer eligible vehicles mentioned by the automotive week will quickly find successors, which only lead to improvements in special cases, ie less CO2.

While promoting small light hybrids (it does not have to be plug-in) may still be useful, the subsidies of large severe SUVs are contra-productive and represent a waste of taxpayers. It would be useful – as required by the 74 scientists in their open letter – an analysis based on the actual CO2 emissions. Which vehicle concepts then prevail, should not worry about politicians.

With the misconception, Germany will still miss the Parisian climate goals as it is already the case from today’s perspective. The design draft of the Federal Environment Office concludes that in 2030 VS. In 1990, only a reduction of 49% is achieved (which is already optimistic) instead of 65% (cf. Day show of 19.8th.2021). If the effect of the missed plug-in hybrid strategy is taken into account, the gap is likely to grow.

  1. Cars over 20 kWh / 100km (combined) consumption or “auxiliary burners” would not be promoted at all.

    From prof. Dr. Peter Hoberg is expected as if only coal would be used for power generation for loading the batteries – but we have a power mix that could be much better if CDU / CSU does not massively hinder the expansion of wind turbines and capture the CDU at the coal would.

    Where the hat goes up, however, is the claim that E-cars would drive with pure coal flow. So my stove at home runs with eco-electricity and the electric car on coal. Already. I make the world how you like me. And if I understand correctly, his great acceptance comes from the claim that the power consumption rises by E-cars and we therefore need more coal flow in the net. Then the direct counter question: why do we need that? How about taking a variety of photovoltaics and wind power? And not in homeopathic doses for poetry album but in a hurry. This is not a technical question for a long time more of feasibility, just a politician and conflict of interest with the electricity companies. I was allowed to read a nice blog yesterday about the possibilities of wind power. From our current 30.000 wind turbines are most relatively old and inefficient. If you look at the balcony and look through the neighborhood, you can see the following: almost no PV systems wide and wide. Only very occasionally.   8. Phev vehicles make sense only when the charging current comes predominantly from your own PV system. We mainly drive the new Audi A3 E to short distances (< 50 km) and actually come out with the electrical reach. Only for trailer operation and for longer trips we use hybrid mode. Recently, I went to Frankfurt and back (560 km in total) with 130 km / h Cruise and on average consumed only 4.4 liters E10 and a total of 8 kWh electricity.
