Why BMW is sticking to the V12 despite its electric strategy
Gigantic nostrils: the BMW kidney, which is larger than other models, indicates that the M 760Li XDrive has a V12

BMW boss Harald Kruger presented a 600 hp 7 Series with a V12 engine at the Geneva exhibition. Almost at the same time he announced the slow decline of the internal combustion engine. Does that fit together??
D.Doing one without leaving the other – this is the motto that brands like BMW and Mercedes can still do business today.
From the Smart to the Maybach, from the Mini to the 7 Series – the two southern German manufacturers have everything in their range with which you can make a profit anywhere in the world. From Germans with high CO2 sensitivity to Hong Kong magnates who need a twelve-cylinder for reasons of prestige, everyone should be served.

This Janus-faced engine philosophy is particularly striking in the BMW brand, which has just turned 100 years old. At the Geneva Motor Show, CEO Harald Kruger presented a 7 Series with an M-Performance seal for the first time. The cryptic name M760Li XDrive means that the luxury sedan powered by a bi-turbo V12 is a long version (Li) with all-wheel drive (XDrive).
The 6.6 liter engine with 600 HP easily shakes 50 HP more from its crank drive than the most powerful predecessor 7 Series. With 800 Newton meters (Nm) of torque on the shaft, the 2.2-ton truck accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds. If the top speed of 250 km / h is not enough, you can unlock more with the M Driver’s Package, which is subject to a surcharge Keep racing up to 305 km / h.
Performance orgy vs. electromobility
When asked by a journalist how much CO2 the new flagship emits, Kruger had to pass and save himself from the situation with the answer "I don’t know by heart, but it is relatively high". The standard value is 294 g / km, which roughly corresponds to the amount of three BMW 116d.
Concern that such performance orgies could thwart efforts in the field of electromobility, the BMW boss dismissed with reference to the solvent and horsepower-oriented clientele in China, the USA and the Middle East with the remark "We need both".

But does BMW really need engines like this V12? In fact, the Bavarians only sell 1.4 percent of their 7-series models with twelve-cylinder engines in China, while the proportion is slightly lower in the USA and Europe. In addition, 3785 V12 engines were added last year for the British subsidiary Rolls-Royce – and the trend is falling.
The twelve-cylinder engine is a German invention. The famous Maybach Zeppelin made the start in 1930: as the DS7 with seven liters and 159 hp and as the DS8 with eight liters and 200 hp. After the war, BMW was the first German manufacturer to bring a twelve-cylinder back into the race in 1987: the M70 engine in the 750i of the E32 series with 300 hp.
Species protection for the twelve-donor
In 1991 Daimler-Benz took up the gauntlet – with the 600 SE (later S600), whose 408 hp set a new record. The last V12 rolled off the production line at Jaguar in 1997, and Volkswagen no longer has a twelve-cylinder in its range after the Phaeton was phased out.
Subsidiary Audi still treats itself to a 6.3 liter W12 with 500 hp for the long version of the A8. The V12 diesel in the Q7, on the other hand, was discontinued because the cost of exhaust gas cleaning according to the Euro 6 standard would have been too expensive. In addition to the arch-rivals from southern Germany, only Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari and Lamborghini remain in the Zwolferklub.

While the twelve-cylinder at Ferrari in particular enjoys something like species protection for historical reasons alone, the question must be allowed as to whether BMW and Daimler really need such engines. Can’t a V8 do everything just as well as a V12 today? And why all the effort for the relatively small numbers?
Professor Stefan Pischinger, Head of the Chair for Internal Combustion Engines (VKA) at RWTH Aachen University, says that the range of performance required today can also be fully covered with a V8 and even a six-cylinder. “But a V12 already offers an even smoother engine run due to the higher ignition frequency. It is outstanding in terms of comfort and will therefore not go away. "
Arguments against cylinder deactivation
A twelve-cylinder is not worse than a V8 in terms of consumption, if you use high-tech systems such as direct injection, cylinder deactivation and fully variable valve control (with BMW “Valvetronic”). "We hardly see any differences between three- and four-cylinder engines, and it’s not just the number of cylinders that determines more or less consumption."
The cylinder deactivation, already used by Volkswagen in four-cylinder engines, is in vain at BMW and Mercedes. In the case of a VW Polo, the system leads to savings of up to one liter in the combined driving cycle. Something like this would also be possible with a V12: "Our simulations show that cylinder deactivation in a 6.0 liter engine brings about a twelve percent reduction in fuel consumption in the European driving cycle," says Pischinger.

A new VW Group engine with cylinder deactivation will soon make its debut in the new Bentley Bentayga. The 608 PS strong W12 switches off the six combustion chambers of the left cylinder bank in the partial load range and should also be used in the next Audi A8. According to the NEDC standard, CO2 emissions should be less than 250 g / km, which corresponds to a consumption of 10.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The new BMW V12 approved 12.6 liters.
BMW spokesman Niklas Drechsler justifies the lack of cylinder deactivation: “In our opinion, the customer pays the extra charge for the twelve-cylinder because he always wants to enjoy perfect running smoothness.
With the twelve-cylinder engine from VW, it remains to be seen how smoothly it will run with a disused cylinder bank. "
Why e-models are important
In contrast to the V12, the euphoria at BMW in the area of electromobility seems to have fizzled out a little – you hit the brakes. "Electromobility is not a sprint, but a marathon," said Harald Kruger several times at the Geneva Motor Show.
In order to be able to reduce the CO2 fleet emissions, BMW urgently needs more fuel-saving models. With the three-cylinder installed up to the 3-series, the brand has demonstrated economy. The M5 has gone from ten to eight, and the M3 from eight to six cylinders. Down to mini and 1 series, the introduction of plug-in hybrids is being prepared, which will make extremely low consumption values possible, at least in the standard cycle.
"E-mobility is a marathon, not a sprint"
BMW boss Harald Kruger has again spoken out in favor of buying incentives to promote sales of electric cars. He justifies this demand here in an interview with reporter Jens Reupert. Source: The World
An electric version of the Mini or environmentally friendly natural gas models such as the G-Tron variants at Audi, on the other hand, are in vain. And downsizing as consistently as Volvo – the Swedes only rely on turbocharged four-cylinder engines – seems completely out of the question.
The BMW electric car division i reported an increase of 66 percent in the previous year, but 30,000 cars worldwide are not many. Tesla sells roughly twice as much, Renault-Nissan brought exactly 84,750 Leaf, Zoe and Kangoo Z.E. to the customer.
When asked about the next new i-model, the responsible spokesman, Wieland Bruch, was monosyllabic: "We want to bring another model above the i3, but have not specifically set the start date."
The combustion engine is no longer worthwhile
Instead of a new i5 (as an extended version of the narrowly cut i3), BMW is initially relying on improved framework conditions, such as the expansion of the infrastructure. Harald Kruger calls for at least 35,000 charging stations and financial incentives when buying e-vehicles: "Otherwise the one million e-vehicles targeted for 2020 on German roads will not come."
However, the costs for batteries and electronics are currently falling continuously, which makes e-cars cheaper and promises wider customer groups. In the case of internal combustion engines, on the other hand, the trend is the opposite, efforts to reduce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide make internal combustion engines more and more expensive.
“There will come a point where further improvements to the internal combustion engine are no longer worthwhile. Everyone should prepare for a change that sometimes comes faster than you think, ”said Kruger.
Under these circumstances, the biotope of the V12 is likely to become even smaller than it is today.
