Why did this super Porsche go up in flames?
The Porsche went up in flames at this Esso gas station in Toronto

A Porsche 918 Spyder is standing at a gas station, surrounded by a fireball. The professional world is puzzling over the cause. Apparently, it is not the first time that a hybrid supercar has caught fire.
W.hen a super-super car goes up in flames, it’s always a big upset for automakers. Even more if it is a so-called eco-car and a Porsche. A 918 Spyder The Swabian sports car manufacturer caught fire on the weekend in Toronto / Canada, and the incident was documented in a passing car.
The cause of the accident is still unclear, but the fact that the Porsche flared at a petrol pump, of all things, suggests that the freshly filled gasoline from the pump nozzle may have ignited, possibly via the exhaust system, and then spread to the Porsche. At a sensitive point like the exhaust system, which can reach temperatures of several hundred degrees, a few splashes of fuel are enough and the car is on fire.

Another uncertainty factor could be the electric motor. E-sedans such as the Fisker Karma and Tesla Model S are considered dangerous because of their highly flammable batteries and have been hit several times as a result of fire accidents hit the headlines. According to a spokesman, Porsche is currently lacking information about the accident in Toronto in order to be able to provide more information.
Blazing LaFerrari
The Porsche 918 Spyder is one of three hybrid supercar models alongside the LaFerrari and the McLaren P1. The German racer reaches a top speed of 345 km / h and races from standstill to 100 km / h in 2.6 seconds.

That the uber-Porsche achieves this peak value is also thanks to two electric motors, which come with a 4.6 liter V8 with a total output of 887 hp. At the end of last year, delivery of the first of a total of 918 copies of the plug-in hybrid began.
A LaFerrari has already shown that such road-legal cars can catch fire in extreme conditions or improper handling, despite the greatest safety precautions. A witness reported how he claimed to have seen the 963-horsepower bullet with flames blazing out of the exhaust pipe during the Trentino-Bondone hill climb.
Fire accidents are also said to have occurred in the first models of the 458 Italia sports car from Maranello. And after a fire, Porsche felt compelled to replace the engine in all GT3 models.
