Why this sexy triumph is a disappointment
An oldie wants to hit the streets again
Bob Dylan had an accident with the original in 1966, now Triumph dares to hit the slopes with a remake of the Bonneville. “Welt” reporter Thomas Delekat tests the new oldie from England. Source: The World

The Triumph Street Twin looks incredibly good and puts a lot of pressure on it in the first few meters. And then it turns out to be a great disappointment; the engineers forgot something important.
B.The first time, distance is required. Ten meters away is ideal. If you then look at the new Triumph, there is a deja vu: You know that, you’ve seen it before.
A Triumph, a Bonneville, classic English motorcycle build from the 1960s. At least that’s what it looks like, with everything that can be seen from ten meters away.
Apart from the 750 Moto Guzzi V7, the Kawasaki W 800 and Hondas CB 1100, there is no other production motorcycle on the market that seems to date from the drum brake era of the 1960s – and yet is brand new.

Motorbike, quad or car? The 3.80 meter long and only 1.32 meter flat power tricycle Polaris Slingshot is a little bit of everything.

The new Triumph Bonneville 900 Street Twin is completely redesigned, a retro bike. It is the confusingly similar revenant of one of the technically greatest, most charismatic motorcycles of all time, the legendary Triumph Bonneville 650 from 1959.
The strange thing is: The new, water-cooled model, equipped with ABS, injection, traction control and digitally translated throttle, looks more classically designed than the original. The water cooler is out of view, and nothing of the cables, hoses, or the injection system can be seen at all.
If you knock on the material with your ankle, it quickly becomes clear that the new one is anything but an oily pile of honestly screwed together iron. The headlight housing made of plastic, also the snap ring, also the front and rear fenders, even the gear housing cover with the chain sprocket behind it.
The Bonnie puts a lot of pressure on in the first few meters
But does it matter? Wherever the new Bonnie tips over onto the side stand – there will always and immediately be some who cannot get enough of her to look at her.
The highlight of the show is yet to come, with the ignition key and starter button. The sound is a pleasure, the 900 cc machine gives the hoped-for, powerful thump. The Triumph team helped with a fashionable trick: the new Bonnie neither ignites her in-line two-cylinder at the same time nor exactly alternately, but exactly in between. This results in a nice, rough brazzling.
In gear, the clutch runs extremely smoothly. The Bonnie marches off, with a lot of pressure on the first few meters. Second gear, third, fourth, all shifted up quickly. And then?
That was it. Anyone who had hoped the new Bonneville would have the same power, the same half-strong rowdy spirit as the original from 57 years ago, with guys like Steve McQueen or Bob Dylan in the saddle – you will pull a long face on the quilted bench of the newcomer.

Even while standing, it looks strange that little Bonnie figures everything possible in the round individual speedometer housing. Everything except the speed. After a kilometer or two on the autobahn, it is clear why the tachometer is really not needed.
The machine loses the desire for more at the latest at 5000 rpm. Already at 6900 it runs into the limiter, at 172 km / h top. That’s what it says in the papers.
The Street Twin is a gorgeous sports bike with a chassis that can’t be adjusted, but does more than just work properly. In addition, there is a gripping single-disc brake, a modern ABS, cast wheels and an unusually low seating position.
All of this is great, state of the art. Except for one thing.
At least 20 hp too little
Triumph presents the Street Twin as a classic sports motorcycle. But the engine doesn’t want to go with it. He’s a stranger, he feels wrong in Bonneville. 900 cc, 80 Nm torque and only 55 hp – these are the typical engine characteristics of a chopper, as it is built by everyone from Honda to Yamaha.
The motor pushes from below. But the torque wave is by far not enough for a sporty sprint. If you want to pass a polo or fiesta at 120 km / h, you should think twice about it.
The Street Twin weighs 215 kilos with a full tank, it costs 8900 euros (plus 450 euros for ancillary costs). Anyone who goes to the cafe or the office with a retro leather jacket and nostalgic helmet is exactly right on it.
Everyone else rightly expects the sporting spirit, and that’s at least 20 hp more. However, Triumph has announced two more Bonneville models for this spring, the T120 and the Thruxton. Both with a large 1200 engine and more horsepower.
