Wild guys, flying boxes and a Suzi

An “F” at the end of the model name stands for the word fairing in English bike parlance. It is precisely around this one letter that Suzuki has the model code of its new Pow…er-Roadsters GSX-S 1000, which “Welt” author Thomas Delekat tested.

The TT circuit on the Isle of Man is historic and famous, and one section is particularly lumbering and insidious. The photographers are lurking there, including our reporter with the Suzuki GSX-S 1000F.
M.sometimes you can be brief. And without loss. What is the big difference between the new naked Superbike from Suzuki, the GSX-S 1000 and the now completely new GSX-S 1000F? It’s not much more than the "F". Everything has been said about the rest of the motorcycle and is here.
By and large, there are only two points in which the GSX-S 1000 and the GSX-S 1000 F differ. One is the level of the fork oil, which is a few millimeters higher in the "F" if the fork is identical. Which results in a smaller air cushion during compression and thus a somewhat harder, more sporty, tuned chassis.

Second, the disguise with which Suzuki throws the "F" in a shell. With this, however, this Suzi only approximates the appearance of a type of motorcycle that no longer really exists – the sports tourer. But the sitting position, handlebars, pegs, knee angles, the whole spinal disc bowing incident forward, that is, the complete ergonomics of the "F", are far too comfortable for something like that.
Counter-draft to the Harley-Davidson
You step on the "F", you sit on it like on the naked version, it’s exactly the same. And how and what? The development department had in the specifications: This should be something for well-heeled people who want to revive the greatest joke of their youth in the sunshine and on the weekend.
Older guys, still technically up to date, who used to be big guys, but now want to drive without competition or duels. In a nutshell: The dynamic edition of Harley-Davidson’s gnawing gnats, who are comfortably drifting along with age.
Both Suzukis are therefore very comfortable. Even for types from 1.85 meters upwards. And now comes the second difference that the "F" makes compared to the naked version. It’s the short windshield over the handlebars. The part is okay because it was obviously not about design, silhouette and appearance, but just about proper function.
This high-tech helmet shows the way with a visor
Navigating the motorcycle can be dangerous. Looking at the navigation system is distracting. The invention of a Russian company can help. However, there is still a condition for this. Source: N24
At least for me (just under 1.90 meters) it worked extremely well. The chest free from wind pressure, but the diverted current clearly below the edge of the helmet. No shaking, no turbulence, no extra noise. But that’s about the differences. There’s nothing more to say about the (almost) identical Suzi sisters.
Bad surprise
Except maybe that the presentation of the "F" took place on the famous, historical and controversial (as it politely says, but you can also say: stupid) TT race course on the Isle of Man. The Eifel, the Taunus, and even more so the Black Forest summarize everything that the almost 61 kilometer long country road route has to offer in terms of interesting curves.
The exception to this is this famous, insidious road fault on the Isle of Man next to a wall. This is where the photographers stand at the TT, which is why there have been the same photos of the same scene for over 50 years, with wild guys on their flying boxes.

When the first Electra Glide hit the market in 1965, there were a lot of skeptics. Nevertheless, this motorcycle became a successful model.

I didn’t know the bumpy route, I don’t want to get to know it any further, but I flew too. The hill is not visible, I had speed and no idea what it was going to lead to. A surprise, and it was very bad.
But at least it was clear that the slightly softer set-up of the naked GSX-S 1000 is the more viable solution for the moment of shock. And the rather dreary sections of the TT route bring something else to light: The inline four-cylinder with nominally 145 hp, which is actually much more powerful, actually has restrained moments around 4000, 5000 revolutions per minute. This is not noticeable when wagging around bends, nothing of it can be noticed. But already with the jerky (overtaking) sprint on a straight track.
From a marketing point of view, a development and test driver from Suzuki ingeniously brought this to the positive formula: that two power levels can be selected from and to mid-speed. He’s right there, there is actually something to it. From 6000 rpm, the Suzi goes off with a vehemence with which the driver’s vision narrows to the tunnel vision. Exactly that, high-speed engine power, recommends the very close gear ratio.
Engine is a masterpiece
The colleague Wulf Weis from “Motorrad News” frozzed, he always shifts two gears at once, and for the high-speed bolt on the autobahn the ratio in sixth gear is too small, so the engine speeds are too high.
But that’s a pretty unusual idea: With a light (198 kilos, without fuel), a sporty, tight power curve planer bike, a compact, manoeuvrable power man to curve onto the driveway to the autobahn and then straight for 500 kilometers too boring.

The engine of the GSX-S 1000, with and without the "F" is ten years old. It comes from the super sports bike GSX-R 1000 from 2005. They did a little something on it, but not a lot. This motor is a masterpiece, a pleasure and an undisturbed feeling of happiness for everyone who has an empathetic feeling for rotating, artful and difficult-working, small-scale interlocking mechanics.
The naked and the clothed side by side
There are a few other Japanese engines, such as those from Honda, that have reached this historic, unsurpassable level of mechanical art. And it will stay that way: in the ten years since then there has been nothing that has gone one better on this peak, this end, this peak in Japanese inline four-cylinder construction.

It is therefore the best, but above all the best motorcycle experience with the GSX-S 1000, to drive it by ear. After the vibrations, the pitch of the revs, the sound from the intake snorkels depending on the throttle position, the valve train, the load conditions, during acceleration, shortly before and after shifting. A pleasure! An experience.
The naked GSX-S 1000 costs 12,195 euros, the "F" 12,795 euros. If you want it to be one of the two, you would do well to put both of them right next to each other before you make up your mind.
