Newbie could be based on the AI: Me study
Audi's march in the direction of electromobility could lead to cuts in combustion cars. In an Autocar report it is said that Audi is discussing the discontinuation of the A1 because of the low margins. The end of the small car could open the way to a new A2 – or the Audi Q2 will become the new entry-level model.
At the unveiling of the new e-tron GT said Audi boss Markus Duesmann about the future of the A1. After that, a third generation of the VW Polo counterpart is unlikely. In a future without the A1, the Q2 could take on a new role in the range, adding Audi "may not do anything smaller".
According to the article, Audi wants to avoid overlaps between electric vehicles and combustion models. "If we look at the Q4 e-tron then we have a model where we have similar models with a combustion engine and we certainly don't want to have the same portfolio with an electric drive. "
In the course of the switch to electric vehicles, Audi will "certainly cut back its combustion engine portfolio over the next ten years. We have to do that and we will do it," said Duesmann.

Rumors of a purely electrically powered A2 have been around for a long time. According to Autocar, Audi is still working on such a car – a successor to the van-like small car A2 produced from 1999 to 2005. Duesmann said the design might not necessarily be copied. The car is said to be based on the AI: Me study that Audi presented at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show.

The Audi AI: Me was an electric car based on the MEB modular electrical construction kit. At 4.30 meters in length, the study was about as long as the ID.3, so it belonged more to the compact than the small car class. So the car was mostly seen as an Audi version of the ID.3. An electric motor on the rear axle with 170 hp provided the drive. The car was intended for the city, so a long range was not in the foreground. A 65 kWh battery was on board; a range was not specified.
The futuristic design included rear doors opening in opposite directions and a missing B-pillar. In addition, the car should have the same matrix light as the AIcon study from 2017, via which the car should communicate with the environment.
