The Jeep Cherokee receives – as the first model in the Fiat Chrysler group – a new engine; 2.2 liter diesel that develops up to 200 hp. Motto: More driving fun for a few…r consumption
The Jeep Cherokee with its two-liter diesel has not yet been really confident on the road. That is changing now. The off-road vehicle has a new heart; that is 2.2 liters in size and up to 200 hp.
Kcompetition stimulates business. This ancient wisdom was not hidden from the strategists at Jeep either. Your Cherokee model doesn’t exactly have a reputation for lavish motorization – at least not on the diesel side. The competition has more to offer here and drives at a higher level of performance. The diesel engine, however, plays the main role in this type of vehicle in Germany and Europe.
Now improvement is in sight. Fiat Powertrain (FPT) has taken the widely used two-liter turbo-diesel (it is also in the Alfa Romeo Giulietta) and modernized it so extensively that one can almost speak of a new engine.
The previous 170 HP and 350 Newton meters are now 185 (from 40,600 euros) and 200 HP (from 45,900 euros). The torque increases to 440 Newton meters, the displacement to 2.2 liters

A first test drive in the Cherokee shows that the fitness regime of the four-cylinder is well received in the mid-size SUV. Although the new diesel reaches its maximum torque quite late, only at 2500 revs – competing engines do their best earlier – one does not necessarily perceive this as tiredness. After all: 75 percent of the maximum power is available from 1500 rpm.
The 2.2-liter unit responds spontaneously, takes off happily and looks particularly harmonious in combination with the standard nine-speed automatic. However, what tarnishes the otherwise good driving impression is the relatively high combustion noise of the diesel engine. Especially in city traffic and when accelerating, you can clearly see what is working under the hood.

When the BMW X1 came onto the market in 2009, it was the first of its kind; no other German manufacturer had a premium compact SUV on offer at the time. In the meantime…The competition has since followed suit, and BMW is already bringing the second X1 generation onto the market.

The X1 is equipped with air conditioning, audio system and i-Drive control technology as standard. A head-up display, LED headlights and numerous assistants are available for an additional charge.… Including a cruise control with a traffic jam function and an emergency braking system for city traffic.

The starting price for the new X1 is 32,900 euros.
The engineers have put a lot of effort into this, especially in this regard. And Fiat likes to point out that they were the first manufacturer to bring common rail direct injection onto the market in Europe as early as 1998 – even before Mercedes. Nonetheless, things should be quieter in this vehicle segment. And finally, the 2.2-liter diesel will soon also have to provide sporty propulsion in the new Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Jeep specifies a standard consumption of 5.7 liters. That’s okay, but by no means the benchmark for the class. It is well known that everyday consumption is consistently higher. Our on-board computer showed just under seven liters.

However, this did not include a fast motorway drive. Jeep indicates 204 km / h at the top. The engineers have also succeeded in making the new diesel engine Euro 6 compatible without the additive AdBlue (uric acid solution). Neither the workshop nor the customer have to worry about refilling.
When designing the new four-cylinder diesel engine, the Fiat Powertrain developers also considered off-road use – after all, it has been the domain of every Jeep for almost 75 years. Water crossings fold up to a wading depth of 48 centimeters. The oil circuit should not collapse even on inclines of 60 percent and inclines of 45 percent, even at very low speeds.
These are values that are far above what one usually expects of oneself and the car. For hardcore off-road use, there is also an off-road reduction available (only for the 200 PS version), which Jeep calls Active Drive II. It costs 1700 euros extra.

The coupe shape may make the GLE look sportier, but it has also made the trunk smaller. However, it still holds between 650 and 1720 liters…. A big minus, however, is the high loading sill of the SUV coupe.
With the new engine, Jeep also changed some of the equipment lines. The new entry-level version is called Sport, starts at 140 hp with the 2.0-liter diesel, has only front-wheel drive and costs 32,900 euros. Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk follow. The 200 PS variant we drive with the Limited equipment already costs 45,900 euros, but it also has a lot more amenities on board.
The standard equipment includes automatic climate control, Selec Terrain assistance system, electric tailgate, rear seats can be divided lengthways, front passenger seat backs can be folded forwards, bi-xenon lights, parking sensors, reversing camera, nappa leather upholstery, seat heating, configurable display, navigation, surround sound system and even a 230 volt power connection. This makes the Jeep Cherokee the best in a long time.
