The new VW was presented in Berlin. It has two edges on the hood, almost as sharp as breakfast knives. What is sensational, however, is not the design, but the price.
E.At first it was just supposed to be some sort of successor, the infusion of an icon called the VW Beetle, whose production ended in 1974. 38 years and 29.13 million copies sold later, the VW Golf is still rolling off the assembly line, in a new look in the future.
The world premiere of the Golf VII, after all one of the most important car innovations of this year, was now staged in the New National Gallery in Berlin: The new Golf as a work of art in the middle, copies of the six previous models draped around it.
It should have more distinctive shapes, that leaked long before the presentation. And indeed: wider and sportier than its predecessor, it appears more full of character. On the bonnet of the Golf VII, two edges run towards the front grille that are almost as sharp as the blade of a breakfast knife – real eye-catchers. And the side sections are also characterized by distinctive edges that the designers placed under the door handles.
Merkel and the Pope – they all drove golf
Brokers will argue that the new Golf hardly differs from its predecessor despite the eye-catching play of edges. Shouldn’t he either, object the VW managers. "The old models shouldn’t feel lost next to the Golf VII," says Ulrich Hackenberg, Chief Development Officer. You have to be able to rely on a Golf technically and visually. Angela Merkel and Pope Benedict XVI already appreciated this outstanding quality in a white Golf II. in a Golf IV before switching to an Audi A8 or a popemobile.
So the devil is in the details in the Golf VII: It has become more elegant, which is reflected in the processing of the materials. The leather steering wheel feels great in the hand, the center console and the dashboard in the cockpit form a classy unit. A 5-inch touchscreen screen flickers there as standard, and it becomes larger in more upscale equipment variants. The new one has a higher quality audio and navigation system, an approach mode and a display with swipe and zoom gestures, similar to the smartphone.
Cylinder deactivation reduces fuel consumption
It has become more economical than its predecessor, the Golf VII. According to the factory, the consumption of diesel should be reduced by up to 23 percent, depending on the engine variant. A 140-horsepower gasoline engine still burns 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers. In addition to the newly introduced cylinder deactivation, a weight reduction of 100 kilos brings this fuel saving.
This is not enough for the environmentalists at Greenpeace, they complain about what they consider to be weak values, even on the evening of the presentation in Berlin. Around 20 environmental activists have gathered in front of the Neue Nationalgalerie to protest, and their banners read: “The new Gulf – climate target missed”. In other words: Volkswagen has missed the chance to present a highly efficient, climate-friendly Golf VII as the base model. The Wolfsburg counter that there should be eco models – the Golf VII is not only coming on the market as a natural gas, but also as an electric car. But not before 2013.
A sporty diesel with up to 180 hp and other gasoline engines up to the over 200 hp GTI have also been announced.
Golf station wagon comes later
The successors to the Golf Plus and Golf Variant will only come in 2013. The corporate executives are not in such a hurry with the large-capacity offshoots because the new basic Golf variant offers more space than the standard Golf VI: At the rear, legroom has increased by 1.5 centimeters, and passengers should be 3.1 centimeters more free in the shoulder area to have. So-called ergonomic sports seats, which are supposed to be particularly easy on the back, are new.
The length and wheelbase have been stretched by almost six centimeters. That is comparatively moderate. The trunk now holds 30 liters more and a total of 380 liters. Helpful when shopping: The loading sill has been lowered by 2.8 centimeters.
Multi-collision brake helpful in accidents
The on-board electronics are full of assistance systems. As with higher VW vehicle classes, cruise control with distance control, an emergency braking function for city traffic, adaptive headlights, proactive seat belt tensioners and internet access are available for selected models. The multi-collision brake, which automatically brakes the vehicle after an accident, is standard.
The price, and that is absolutely sensational, is not rising: In November, the new Golf will cost as much at dealerships as the old one – 16,975 euros.
