- About the Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth
Sustainable, flexible and well positioned for the future of transport: The Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth is communicated to the center for emission-free transport within the production network of Mercedes-Benz truck, as the manufacturer. Company management and works council have therefore agreed a corresponding target image for the location. Both parties agreed on essential cornerstones for future development and future security of the largest location of Mercedes-Benz truck.
This includes, among other things, the decision to set up the production of further trucks with CO2-neutral drive at the WOrth site. In addition to the Mercedes-Benz Eactros, who goes there in October 2021 in series, the production of further emission-free trucks, such as the production.B. Eeconic and Eactros Longhaul planned in WOrth. Daimler Truck will continue to invest substantially in the location in the coming years – a clear commitment to the business location Germany and the Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth.
“Today, we are planning the groundbreaking basis for the future of the truck production of Mercedes-Benz. The technology change of our industry towards locally emission-free trucks also means an immense upheaval for our locations and production. With the new destination for the WOrth plant, we ensure competitiveness and thus the long-term future of the site: In the future, we would like to expand its production production of our electric trucks here and already create the conditions for this.”- Sven Grable, Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks Operations, responsible for the worldwide production network of Mercedes-Benz truck
The future picture for the Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth is set in a business agreement, with a term until the end of 2029. The details of the implementation are to be further developed between management and employee representatives in the coming months. For the upcoming transformation of the location including conversion of production, significant means are needed. The company wants to continue investing in the location in the coming years; The transformation also requires support from public hand. The Daimler Truck AG submitted a request in accordance with the Federal Government in the context of the promotion of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, in which the conversion at the WOrth site is included. The state government Rhineland-Palatinate has already signaled its support in the last government statement.
The location decision for the trucks with alternative drives is an important pillar of the new strategic orientation of the factory, such as Sven GraBle, the head of the worldwide truck production network of Mercedes-Benz, explains: “WOrth becomes the tillpoint for the transport of the future In the production network Mercedes-Benz truck. We bundle our technological know-how with a fully flexible and more efficient production, and the whole thing in a CO2-neutral, digitized factory with appropriate logistics and infrastructure.”
Also at the German Powertrain locations, the Mercedes-Benz works in Gaggenau, Mannheim and Kassel, company management and works council are currently in intensive discussions about the future orientation of the locations. The talks are already well advanced, an agreement should be achieved as soon as possible.
Zero Emission Trucks secure long-term utilization and employment
In the transformation towards CO2-neutral transport, Daimler truck consistently sets two fully electric drive technologies: the battery and the hydrogen-based fuel cell. With these, every application of the customer can be covered with full flexibility in the routes – from well-planned, urban distribution traffic to heavy plannable, multi-day transports. Which solution is used by the customer depends on the concrete application.
The first battery-electrically powered truck is the Mercedes-Benz Eactros for routes in distribution traffic in October 2021 in the WOrth plant in series production, which follows Eeconic in the coming year. The battery electrical EACTROS LONGHAUL for long-distance traffic should follow from the middle of the decade. With the decision to manufacture Zero Emission Trucks in WOrth, the company secure the long-term utilization of the factory and stable employment at the location.
Qualification and flexibilization as a key to the future
For the production of trucks with alternative drives, new assembly processes are introduced at the WOrth site, including the infrastructure necessary for this purpose. Thus, Daimler Truck pioneering work for CO2-neutral transport “Made in WOrth”, as the manufacturer announces. Decisive factors on the way there are both the qualification and further development of the workforce as well as the stronger flexibilization of production.
The goal is to make the workforce fit for future tasks. Started in 2018, around 2000 employees in WOrth’s site and continuing education center have been further qualified in dealing with high-voltage vehicles and components – and indispensable competences for mounting electrically powered trucks are acquired.
Flexible production ensures the efficient production of both traditional and emission-free trucks in the Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth in the coming years – and thus the competitiveness of the entire location. The so-called FULLFLEX concept makes it possible to integrate the emission-free trucks into existing production. In this way, the work is able to adapt to the respective market demand efficiently and even faster. In addition, the work is currently preparing to significantly increase production capacity in accordance with the currently good order situation by moving from two-shifting to a three-shift operation this year.
Green factory: Also production becomes CO2-neutral
In addition to the products, the entire location WOrth including production from 2022 should become CO2-neutral, just like all other European works by Daimler Truck. This is possible, among other things, by a unique green flow concept at Daimler: The CO2-free electricity reference from renewable energy sources forms the basis for CO2 neutral production. The location refers to 2022 electricity from wind and solar parks as well as hydropower plants.
On the way to a green factory, the Mercedes-Benz plant WOrth should also work in the long term CO2-free, in the coming years successively a fully renewable energy system. An important role is also playing the constant improvement in energy efficiency in the factory.
An example: In perspective, a central absorption refrigeration system replaces hundreds of decentralized air conditioners at the site, whereby existing heat is used instead of electricity for air conditioning. Existing buildings including infrastructure are additionally renovated from the ground up energetically and new climate-friendly technologies used in production, such as the so-called “Eco Paint Process” in the painting.
