A light electric vehicle for 9,900 euros: the XEV Yoyo, announced for the end of 2020, is now available. At first glance, the car is a bit reminiscent of the Smart Fortwo, there are also side bars on the doors similar to the Renault Twizy.

At 2.53 meters, the XEV Yoyo is even shorter than the Smart Fortwo, which measures 2.70 meters. The Yoyo is also a little higher than it is wide – not an ideal prerequisite for fast cornering. But that's not what the yoyo is designed for. The tiny car feels most at home in the big city, but with a top speed of 80 km / h it can also dare to take the country road. The Yoyo is driven by a 7.5 kW permanent synchronous motor on the rear axle.

It ensures a range of 150 kilometers. It is charged either at the Schuko socket or via a type 2 connection. The battery should be able to be charged from 30 to 100 percent in four hours.

One of the special features is a battery exchange system: The three rod-shaped batteries are easily accessible via a small flap at the bottom of the stern. Each battery weighs 25 kilos. Assuming some muscle strength, the elements can still be exchanged by hand when they are empty.

According to our colleagues from InsideEVs Italy, the empty batteries should be exchanged for fresh batteries at stations the size of a snack machine. The batteries are removed individually and pushed into appropriate compartments with slots, where they are brought back to 100 percent charge level within an hour – apparently, charging is faster here than via the normal charging connection. According to InsideEVs.it, you can also order a battery change via an app. You park the car empty on the roadside in the evening and an assistance service refills the batteries overnight.

As a light electric vehicle of the L7E class, the trolley weighs just 450 kilos without a battery. The construction consists of a steel frame, while many other parts are made using 3D printing.

XEV Italia is based in Venice. According to InsideEVs Italy, the car was designed at Turin Polytechnic and made in China. For the time being it will only be offered in Italy, where there are currently at least 20 dealers; the number is expected to rise to around 30. The yoyo can already be ordered in Italy; prices start at 13,900 euros. With state premiums, the amount is reduced to 9,900 euros. According to the configurator, delivery will start in July 2021.

The brand wants to offer the Yoyo in all important European markets in the future. After the yoyo, two more electric models are to be launched, one with two and one with four seats. Then it should be normal cars, not light vehicles.
