XF series already accounts for two thirds of Jaguar sales

Things are different with the XF. It is the sales engine in the Jaguar range, thanks to its elegant and sporty design and the typical Jaguar wellness factor in the interior. How alive are you? – You may or may not find this newly introduced brand slogan by the traditional British manufacturer, which is now part of the Indian Tata Motors Group, interesting. But the fact is: Jaguar sales will be boosted by the new station wagon version of the XF.

The station wagon version only comes five years after the world premiere of the XF sedan at the IAA 2007, because ex-Jaguar mother Ford originally only approved the sedan. From today’s point of view, that was a strategic mistake, as Audi, BMW and Mercedes are making princely profits across Europe in the segment of premium station wagons from the upper middle class.

The proportion of luxury trucks in the model mix generally exceeds that of sedans by far, with the Audi A6 Avant reaching around 70 percent at peak times.

"The XF currently has a 2/3 share of Jaguar sales in Germany and worldwide. Since the Sportbrake appeals to new target groups, we of course expect an increase in sales, ”says Jaguar LandRover Germany boss Peter Modelhart.

If the discontinued X-TYPE station wagon heard the bland additional name Estate, this time the marketing experts chose the addition Sportbrake. It sounds sporty and even arouses associations with you "Shooting Brake ”, a hatchback coupe that looks more like a station wagon than a sedan with its tailgate.

Long roof section opens up 48 millimeters more headroom in the rear

Due to the Ford lapse, Jaguar was forced to develop the station wagon version of the XF introduced in 2008 entirely on its own. The sports suit takes over the wheelbase, the rear overhang and the other dimensions of the sedan, the changes only begin from the B-pillar.

The side window graphics stretch like a bowstring towards the rear, a chrome strip additionally accentuates the contours. At the same time, the shoulder line rises backwards and emphasizes strong hips. As a result of the longer roofline, the rear passengers can also look forward to 48 millimeters of additional headroom.

The stylists around design boss Ian Callum managed a clever optical trick at the rear: glossy black-colored D-pillars made of polycarbonate, together with the dark-tinted rear window, create the illusion of an all-round, uninterrupted glass section.

According to Jaguar, the designers were inspired by the superstructures of luxury yachts for this solution. But similarities to the rear end of the large XJ sedan cannot be denied.

In the housings of the horizontal taillights there are LED inserts for the brake, taillights and turn signal lights; a horizontal chrome clip that extends far into the rear lights subjectively extends the width of the car.

Lifestyle combination with enough space for golf bags

The XF Sportbrake is of the species because of its early rather than late sloping roof "Lifestyle ”combination – he doesn’t want to be a load master. Perhaps that is why Jaguar is keeping a low profile when specifying the luggage volume with the rear seat up.

The rear door has an automatic closing mechanism – so it pulls itself into the lock on the last way. On request, there is an electric opening and closing function that can be controlled via remote control. Handy when your hands are full of shopping bags.

The V8 fuel guzzlers are left out in the XF station wagon

In contrast to the XF sedans, the Sportbrake does not have the 5.0 liter V8 petrol engines, which are now hardly up-to-date, but which are still undaunted in the sedan. In their place are three less consumptive diesels. First and foremost the 2.2-liter, 190-hp four-cylinder, which, thanks to the standard automatic start / stop system, consumes 5.4 liters / 100 km.

At the top, the two 3.0-liter V6s with 240 and 275 hp also meet the performance expectations of sporty drivers. The top model 3.0 L diesel "S “shines with a maximum torque of 600 Nm, which makes it ideal for a towing vehicle.

Germany boss Peter Modelhart again: “In Europe, the diesel share in the XF is already around 90 percent. It was therefore an obvious choice to offer the XF Sportbrake exclusively with the powerful and economical diesel engines. ”Especially since – what he does not say – the XF station wagon will not find its way into the diesel-skeptical America, at least for the time being.

Eight-speed automatic from ZF including steering wheel shift paddles

Traditionally manual gearshifts are no longer used in today’s Jaguar – the XF Sportbrake is no exception. An 8-step automatic from ZF handles the gear changes, fully automatically or sequentially using paddles on the steering wheel.

In the interior, the XF station wagon also exudes the inimitable combination of cool modern British style and cozy craftsmanship known from the sedan. The control buttons now have a matt black finish in "soft-touch “impression and lighting in soft phosphor blue.

The metallic aurora finish for most of the decorative elements is complemented by panels in aluminum or wood. The front seats are more pronounced. And so that there is not the slightest hint of a commercial vehicle aura, the cargo area is lined with the same fabrics and surfaces as the passenger compartment.

Air suspension on the rear axle and trailer track stabilization

A specialty of the XF station wagon is the self-leveling air suspension on the rear axle – almost a must for a large premium station wagon. Because it is a prerequisite for the installation of a level control, which in turn always keeps the body level even when fully loaded.

If a trailer coupling is installed for the horse transporter, a trailer track stabilization system developed by Bosch comes into action when necessary. Via the ESP sensors, it detects the trailer’s tendency to roll and suffocates it by applying targeted braking to the towing vehicle.

Jaguar wants to expand the options for XF Sportbrake customers with two optional additional packages: The aerodynamic pack consists of a lower front bumper with a black radiator grille surround, more pronounced side skirts and a rear roof spoiler that is larger than the base model. With the Black Pack, all parts of the body that are otherwise kept in chrome, including the alloy wheels, are dipped in a matt black finish.

3000 euros combination surcharge – and perhaps all-wheel drive as an option

When it comes to the price of the standard XF Sportbrake, Jaguar charges a combination surcharge of 3000 euros compared to an identically powered sedan. Which raises the price for an XF Sportbrake 2.2 D to 47,900 euros.

It is not yet clear whether there will be an all-wheel drive version, but it is being considered. Jaguar should bring itself to this for two reasons: Because both Audi (quattro) as well as BMW (xDrive) and Mercedes (4matic) offer 4×4 variants. And even the unloved stepson X-TYPE Estate – at least as a V6 model – was equipped with it.
