With 800-volt technology, the car should recharge its range twice as fast as a Taycan or Ioniq 5

Xpeng G9: New electric SUV presented for the global market-global

A few days ago, Xpeng promised us a new electric SUV and today it was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show. As suspected, it's called the G9 and is the fourth Xpeng model after the G3 and the P7 sedans as well as the P5.

Xpeng describes the car as a mid-range SUV; this makes it a class larger than the compact G3. That is a bit surprising, because the designation G9 suggests a classification at the upper end of the range. We suspect the classification as a mid-range SUV is an understatement. Especially since Xpeng announced an SUV at its Tech Day in late October that announced the P7 on the same platform as the luxury sedan.

Xpeng did not provide any information on the dimensions; so far there has been talk of a length of five meters. Another advantage of a large SUV is that, according to Cnevpost, a 100 kWh battery is installed. Information on the range and the drive is not yet available. Photos of the interior are also missing.

The G9 has an 800 volt system, so it can charge very quickly. At the brand's own X-Power charging stations, you should be able to recharge electricity for 200 kilometers in just five minutes. That would be twice as fast as with Porsche and Hyundai: Both the Taycan and the Ioniq 5 should be able to recharge 100 kilometers in five minutes.

The car also uses silicon carbide technology, presumably for power electronics – this reduces power losses. Both the 800-volt system and the SiC technology and the brand's own charging stations were not announced until the end of October at Xpeng's Tech Day. At that time it was said that the charging stations would offer 480 kW – significantly more than the 350 kW from Ionity.

The G9 is the first Xpeng model with the assistance system package Xpilot 4.0. For this purpose, two lidar sensors are installed on the front. As a reminder: the assistance package in the G3 launched in 2018 still had version number 2.5. The G9 is also said to be the first car from China to feature a Gigabit Ethernet communication architecture. This helps with the driver assistance systems and accelerates over-the-air updates.

The G9 was built for world markets. The car should get five stars not only in the Chinese C-NCAP crash test, but also in the EuroNCAP and meet the strict EU certification standards. The guidelines for the reusability of the materials were also met.

Xpeng said more information will not be available until the Beijing Auto Show (April 2022). Information on the price or the date of the market launch is not yet available. Rumor has it that it will start at the end of 2022, but this has not been confirmed.
